A number of years ago I produced a series of paintings based on a gateway built by Inigo Jones in 1621 for Beaufort House in Chelsea.
It was acquired by Lord Burlington in 1738 and moved to the gardens of Chiswick House.
I was once asked by a friend whether this painting is about ‘Death’… I can understand why I was asked but, in fact, the painting is about ‘Life’ and how I see it: this is a Gateway through which one enters into the adventures of life and of the unknown.
