In the 1980s I learned the craft of water gilding techniques (i.e.working with gold leaf) and for a period of time produced a number of gilded panels such as the one on this page.
It is quite a complex and time-consuming process of gilding the panel first, and then, once all the gilding work is done, of painting the sky and the intricate patterns.
