In this painting everything is not quite as it seems: the canvas leaning against a door reflects the scene as if it were a real mirror, yet it is not a mirror. It is, in effect, just a canvas. Not surprisingly, therefore, the chess-piece is not reflected in it, although much of the rest of the scene is. The landscape too is not really a landscape, it is a piece of cloth. Or is it the cloth which is turning into a landscape? The painting asks more questions than it answers.
