This is one of two versions of this painting (the other is with a blue sky). The artist is in an imaginary studio on a beach, searching for something under the sea. He is not searching for anything particular: he is simply 'searching'. The painting on the easel has a rope emerging from it which suggests that, in the world of the artist at least, it is possible to travel from one picture, or 'reality', into the next.
