This painting is inspired by the deserts around Bir Hima in the SW Region of Saudi Arabia. The Bir Hima region sits between the Arabian Shield, which is the range of mountains which extends along the entire length of the western coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and the Arabian Plateau (the desert which stretches towards the East). Hundreds of inscriptions are to be found on the sandstone jebels ('hills') characteristic of this area.
