This painting is taken from a sketch done on the Red Sea Coast in an area called the Tihama, not far from a town called Ad Darb. This is quite far south of Jeddah, in an area where there used to be considerable volcanic activity in the distant past. Now all is peace and quite: a perfect place to stop and sketch.
