The architecture for this painting is taken from the basement areas in the courtyard of Somerset House in London. This type of double-depth basement can also be seen in Bath in streets such as Pulteney Street with its grand houses. These houses would have had their kitchens in the basement, above a 'sub-basement' which would protect the kitchens from damp and could also be used for storage of food and wine.
