BATH: THE COLONNADE: Painted - 2005

This is an aerial view of Bath showing many of the landmarks such as the Royal Crescent and the Roman Baths. The imaginary 'aerial' bridge is inspired by a small, beautiful colonnade in Abbey Church Yard, in the centre of Bath. The view is of the city facing West, towards Bristol.

A free Black & White 'Key' showing the complete layout of the buildings in the painting above, (detail on left) is included with the above Giclée print. The 'Key' contains the names of places and major buildings in Bath, as well as their dates of construction. The place-names include The Roman Baths, The Abbey (1499), The Assembly Rooms (1769-71), The Grand Pump Room (1790) and the famous Pulteney Bridge (1769-74), designed by Robert Adam. The feature of the bridge is that it has shops on both sides.

SUNSET AT PRIOR PARK: Painted - 2005

SUNSET AT PRIOR PARK: Painted - 2005

The Bridge at Prior Park is one of the little-known architectural gems of Bath. It was built by John Wood the Elder for his patron, Ralph Allen, in the 18th Century.

It is Palladian in style, as is indeed most of the classical architecture of Bath. It is one of three similar bridges in England. The other two bridges are at Wilton House and Stowe.

THE MOONCATCHER: Painted - 1994

THE MOONCATCHER: Painted - 1994

The architecture for this painting is taken from the basement areas in the courtyard of Somerset House in London. This type of double-depth basement can also be seen in Bath in streets such as Pulteney Street with its grand houses. These houses would have had their kitchens in the basement, above a 'sub-basement' which would protect the kitchens from damp and could also be used for storage of food and wine.

The Mooncatcher is the dreamer in all of us.

THE HOUSE OF IDEAS

THE HOUSE OF IDEAS: Painted - 1995

This painting is about intense use of colour on the one hand and, on the other, the use of symbols such as the floating balls which represent the many ideas that surround us on a day to day basis.

The original house, on which the painting is based, is situated in Upper Wimpole Street, London.

THE GATEWAY

THE GATEWAY: Painted - 1995

This gateway can be seen in the gardens of Chiswick House, near London, which was built by the 3rd Earl of Burlington in 1725-9. The Earl was a great admirer of Inigo Jones who had introduced Palladianism to England in the previous century. The gateway was originally designed by Inigo Jones for Beaufort House, also a London house and was relocated to Chiswick House as a tribute to Inigo Jones.

Gateways are often associated with the theme of dreams and escape.
