CHISWICK HOUSE: 1995 - 137cm x 92cm
The building that can be seen through the archway is Chiswick House (1725-9), built by Lord Burlington and modelled on Palladio's magnificent Villa Rotonda at Vicenza. The Earl used this villa for displaying works of art and entertaining his friends.
The gateway was built by Inigo Jones for Beaufort House in Chelsea, London, in the 1620's. Later it was moved to Lord Burlington's house in Chiswick.
Lord Burlington was a great admirer of Inigo Jones who had originally introduced this Palladian style of architecture to England with the building of Banqueting House at Whitehall Palace in London in 1622.
